“Touch and feel” finishing… the 5 senses of printing

Lamination, painting, embossing, screen printing, embossing, hot stamping, lamination and letterpress.
The ennoblements, or exclusive finishes, are the connection between technologies and our senses, they bring out the materials and details of the print, transmit tactile emotions, trigger imagination and creativity on the possibilities of printing.

The perception of a product depends on the set of all its sensory characteristics such as color, shape, smell, tactile sensation, sound. These aspects are not processed individually by our nervous system but affect each other, providing a final sensation that goes beyond the sum of the individual characteristics.
While it is true that one learns by touch, it is equally true that one feels pleasure by touching. And so also in the printed product, touch plays a key role.
Industry studies have shown, for example on a packaging of beauty products, they prefer to touch the packaging before buying the product. The 46%, of the interviewees, stated that a luxury packaging is synonymous with quality and a higher price of the product.

Now let's see, in particular, the various types of finishes that make the printed product, whether it is a package, a business card or a catalog, a necessary good and synonymous with quality.

Lamination
The world of coatings and paints takes the lion's share in creating tactility. Satin and soft touch laminations are widely used and arouse a refined touch sensation. In particular, the soft touch lamination has proven to be able to activate particular neurons that cause pleasure, increasing the propensity to buy following tactile gratification.

Offset and UV paints
It is with the varnish that it is possible to give the paper a real tactile sensation. Amazing effects can be achieved on all types of printed matter at low cost.
Various types of effects can be obtained with UV coating.
By working on the quantity of paint, you have varnishes with different thicknesses, or velvet effects (soft touch), rough sand effect thanks to micro granules immersed in the paint, pearlescent or glittery.

Screen printing, including digital
By far, however, the most accentuated tactile effects are obtained by exploiting screen printing which also has the advantage of allowing not only the use of paints, but also pigmented inks, therefore not only transparent but also colored finishes.

Hot stamping
The sheen of gold, silver or red gives printed products that touch that catches everyone's eye. The special film is lightly pressed into the paper, producing a refined tactile effect. There can be many colors of lamination in order to make a business card or any other printed product unique

LetterPress or low relief printing
The latest trend in the field of communication is the oldest and most fascinating printing system, the typography, which after years of decadence has been "rediscovered" in the United States and from there is rapidly spreading around the world under the name of " Letterpress ". Fundamental to this new / ancient technique is the support. The paper must be of high weight, soft to the touch and of very high thickness, to allow the matrix to penetrate deeply, obtaining the characteristic inverse relief effect that gives a particular charm to the prints and ensures a superior duration over time.
