«Emails of public offices closed, no access to services to citizens including payment of bills, taxes and parking. The city of Baltimore, in the United States, has been knocked out for weeks after 10,000 public administration computers were blocked by hackers with ransomware, the virus that takes a computer hostage and a ransom must be paid to get the data back.

It is the second attack of its kind in Baltimore and not the only one in the United States. In the last year alone, 20 American cities have been victims of it.

As The Baltimore Sun explained, the city's computers were infected with the RobinHood ransomware on May 7, the ransom demanded is $ 100,000 in bitcoin. The mayor refused to pay and employed a cyber security team to restore the IT services for citizens and companies. A practice that takes time, however. The mayor further stated on social media that the city's essential services have remained in operation, that there is no hard evidence that personal information has been compromised, and that the city is working with the FBI to resolve the situation. Last year Baltimore was also the victim of a ransomware attack that paralyzed the 911 emergency services.

According to some experts interviewed by the New York Times, the attack was accidental and not aimed at the city. It is very likely, that is, that the virus was contracted by an employee, perhaps through an infected email and then, with a domino effect, it spread to thousands of public administration computers.
