At the same time, more and more merchants and companies, realizing their importance, try to exploit them to promote their business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is often the case, however, customers who are satisfied with the shopping experience tend not to leave any <\/span><b>review<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if not the few who are particularly affected positively. On the contrary, most of the <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it comes from users who have had a negative experience and who take the opportunity to complain about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But can we trust them? And if the <strong>reviews<\/strong> weren&#039;t really true? No fear, <strong>a crackdown on the part of the European Union is coming, which requires transparency<\/strong>. But let&#039;s go in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Are the reviews reliable?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, a satisfied customer will have little reason to leave a positive review. Much easier to leave <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they will be users who are dissatisfied, angry or who have had a negative experience. But how much can we trust a review on the web, whether it be positive or negative? The answer is: not much for now!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative ones, for example, are sometimes exploited by users seeking revenge, unfair competitors who aim to harm the competition and people who base their opinion on subjective opinions, isolated episodes, etc. On the contrary, the <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive can be published by friends, relatives or by the companies themselves, directly or on commission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, businesses tend to promote positive comments, perhaps by posting them on their site, or by offering discounts and promotions to incentivize them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, we can&#039;t be certain that the restaurant with the most stars in town is also the best, but it might even be the one with the least.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Transparent reviews<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This problem, however, is destined to change or, to put it better, a part. In Italy, as in other European countries before you, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/IT\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32019L2161&amp;from=EL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Directive 2019\/2161<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promulgated precisely to regulate the <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the Web. Given that the publication of false reviews remains an illegal practice, even if difficult to verify, the measure aims to increase transparency on the part of companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Directive, in fact, requires that a company must:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inform consumers about the procedures by which they verify the origin of <\/span><b>reviews<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicate in some way if the review received was stimulated by incentives such as rewards and discount coupons;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, the provision prohibits:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use only the <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive in a discretionary way;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indicate that the comments received were written by individuals who have actually purchased the product, without verifying that this is indeed the case;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falsely review, directly or through third parties, their business (positively) or competing businesses (with <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through these measures, the European Parliament hopes to crack down on today&#039;s use of <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online. But problems remain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What changes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The points listed above are obviously aimed at companies and their business and marketing practices. Once the Directive has entered into force, commercial activities will no longer be able to exploit the <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for promotional purposes and some of the most commonly used incorrect practices will also be regulated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be sure, the most well-known digital platforms such as Facebook and Google already play a role of control and eventual removal of <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which are reported as inappropriate. There are also tools such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trustpilot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which prevent manipulation by the sites, through verification systems. However, according to research, 114 out of 223 sites were unable to guarantee the authenticity of <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receipts. Reason that prompted the European Commission to introduce this provision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the question of the \u201csubjectivity\u201d of the comments left by users remains pending. This is a difficult question to resolve, as we cannot (and never will) know if a customer has had a negative experience due to a lack on the part of the company or for extraneous reasons. In other words, annoying, pretentious and arrogant customers will always exist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How companies respond<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of the new rules (which we recall have not yet entered into force), to manage the <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online in the best possible way, exhibitors must:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitor the reviews received, reporting inappropriate and untrue ones;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collaborate with suppliers of <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verified, to prevent bogus comments;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploit the criticisms received to improve their service, not all <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative are published with the intention of harming the company;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respond to the negative comments of the so-called trolls and haters, pointing out the inconsistencies and absurdities (which we assure you will be present), in a kind and polite way.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, as we said at the beginning, the <\/span><b>reviews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are now fundamental for the reputation of a business, the latter must strive to ensure that they are as positive as possible, without ignoring the negative ones.
