The will is to create a network that better protects the <\/span><b>privacy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of users, along the lines of what has already been implemented by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firefox <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big changes are on the horizon, especially for those companies that make <\/span><b>online advertising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a business and for those sites that take advantage of the <\/span><b>Cookies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to keep their service free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is time to adapt to this radical change (just think that the announcement was made for the first time on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/products\/chrome\/building-a-more-private-web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 August 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it will not be operational before 2023), but how will the web change and what must the companies involved do to adapt?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#039;s go in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What are cookies?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In technical terms, a <\/span><b>cookies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an identification token used by a server-side web application to receive and store information on the client side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words a <\/span><b>cookies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is &quot;a small file, stored on the computer by websites while browsing, useful for saving preferences and improving the performance of websites (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cookie#:~:text=In%20termini%20pratici%20e%20non,navigazione%20da%20parte%20dell&#039;utente.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &quot;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To tell the truth, there are different types of <\/span><b>Cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each with a different function. The most important and known are the so-called <\/span><b>technical cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , which allow a better use of the page and shorter loading times. They are so important that the user&#039;s consent is not required for their activation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they also exist <\/span><b>advertising cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that require explicit permission. These <\/span><b>Cookies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0they are defined <\/span><b>third party cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as they do not belong to the owner of the site you are visiting. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are installed by other companies that, after agreement with the owner of the web domain, exploit the <\/span><b>Cookies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to collect user data for advertising purposes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will be the latter who will be retired in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What changes?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we said, the purpose of this operation is to privilege the privacy of the individual web user. On the other hand, the risk is that of penalizing enormously the companies operating in the sector of <\/span><b>online advertising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including <em>Google<\/em> itself) and those sites that exploit the <\/span><b>third party cookies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to keep their service free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid this, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed a series of solutions, four of which are already in the testing phase. One of the most advanced projects under development is called <\/span><b>Federated Learning of Cohorts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>FloC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is to move from an individual profiling system to one <\/span><b>collective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The information collected by <\/span><b>Cookies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should therefore be made <\/span><b>anonymous <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and inserted into groups of users who share similar interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way it will be possible to continue to collect information, while ensuring the privacy of individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to estimates by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the new technologies will be available starting from the last months of 2022, to allow web developers to adapt to change and migrate their services. While in mid-2023 the <\/span><b>third party cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The modalities of the revolution<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The timing announced by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in reality, they have already undergone shifts (initially the transition was scheduled for 2022) and place <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a position behind the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firefox<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which have already taken anti-tracking measures<\/span><b> third party cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shows that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is moving with caution, aware of the enormous extent of this general ecosystem change. After all, the Mountain View company holds the majority of the market shares and draws great benefits from the business of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digife.it\/en\/ecommerce-ferrara-bologna-digife-websites\/\"><b>online advertising<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a real revolution and, as such, requires mediation between the parties concerned, on the one hand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and on the other hand developers, publishers and regulators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding a meeting point therefore becomes fundamental, especially for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itself, which in this way could benefit from numerous advantages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would like to prevent website operators and advertisers from using alternative tracking methods to <\/span><b>Cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Device_fingerprint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fingerprinting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the client side, the solutions proposed by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also serve to discourage the use of programs that block the<\/span><b>online advertising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, generally called <\/span><b>ad-blocker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A last but most important aspect concerns the relationship <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/ users. With the changes that will be introduced, it is more than likely that the control exercised by will increase <em>Google<\/em> on<\/span><b>online advertising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If external companies can no longer count on anyone <\/span><b>cookies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, indeed, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will continue to collect and store data.
