«China will present to the US a series of preconditions to end the trade war, including the stop of the ban on Huawei, raising doubts that Xi Jinping and Donald Trump will be able to find an agreement on the revival of the negotiations. The Wall Street Journal reported, citing Beijing officials according to which, among other preconditions, are the removal of punitive tariffs and the US renunciation of major purchases of American goods by Beijing. Despite this, Xi "will not be aggressive". The meeting between the two heads of state is scheduled for Saturday in Japan, where the G20 opens tomorrow.

Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Vice Premier Liu He, the chief negotiators of the US and China, had a phone call this week and, ahead of the leaders' summit, are expected to meet in person in Osaka. However, it is not clear what the two will talk about and if what they will define will be approved by Trump and Xi. Despite the list of preconditions, the Chinese president will not have the aggressive stance with the tycoon, according to Chinese officials.

Indeed, Xi will briefly outline his vision on an optimal bilateral relationship, including Beijing's help on security dossiers that worry Washington, such as Iran and North Korea. The US side, on the other hand, will try to understand if the Chinese counterpart is willing to resume negotiations from the point where they stopped in April, at the threshold of the 90% of the agreement, as the Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin somehow anticipated yesterday. : in view of the finish line, according to the US reading, Beijing made an abrupt and sudden change of course.
